"High On The Hog"

Most of us know  what "hump day" is in the  work week.  It is Wednesday-and you will usually have a big sigh of relief in getting past it, since  your work week is almost at its end.   This brings to my mind a very different "hump day" which I experienced in my younger years.  I would have to say that this was the very first "hump day" I ever experienced and  I was so relieved to get past it!

It all began when my mother was driving a few of us kids to town.  We had an old light blue early sixties Ford Falcon.  It was a small car, and one of my brothers and I were in the back seat, and my mama was driving.  We were playing and talking in the back seat, and we were right in front of Freeman Bishop's place, going to "town" (Ehrhardt, SC)  when all of a sudden our little car just rose up in the air, almost as if a great whale had gotten under a little boat.  We rocked frontwards & then sideways a little, and finally there was a loud thump and we were back down on the ground again.  My mama just kept on driving us to town,  as if nothing ever happened, but I remember  her exclaiming that we had just run over one of Freeman's hogs!

We looked back & then saw the huge hog walking off the side of the road, it must have been stunned a little, and so we knew then for sure what had happened.  My mama began crying, and she must have  felt really bad for running over the hog.  It was not a small one either, as it pitched our little Falcon up in the air, and I remember thinking, we are "high on the hog" now!  Later, after we got home, Mr. Bishop was contacted about the hog, and everything was straightened out.  Being a small child, this was something you would not forget!  So,  hump day means something different to me than it might to some of you, but nevertheless, there is a lesson to be learned here for all of us.

No matter what obstacle gets into your path in life, remember that there will always be a "hump day" somewhere along the way.  There will come a time when you will begin to see signs of making it past some of the big "humps" & hurdles in your life.  Just like my mother did, however, you just might have to keep your eyes on the road and your foot on the gas, and keep on going & don't look back!  You can always see the silver lining behind the clouds, if you look hard enough. I will never forget that day that we were truly "High on the Hog!"

Well, I am getting a little hungry now, so I think I will go fry me up some good old country ham!  Yes, I think some good old southern grits would go just fine with that ham, don't you?  Won't you join me?  See you next time, and ya'll come back, ya hear?
