Creed |

Teacher's Creed
I believe I have been called by God to
teach. I believe in children...young and old...black and
white...rich and poor....each in need of learning. I
believe in blackboards, chalk dust, textbooks, and computers
for each has a part in imparting knowledge. I believe the
love I give to my students will someday be reflected in their
lives. I believe the gift of teaching is not measured
simply by marks, enrollment, or the end of the school year.
It is in the witness I give and the fullness of the life
lived by those I teach. I believe I have the power to lead
those in need of learning to the threshold of their own minds.
I believe in my giftedness to use each of the tools
available no matter how new or old..for the light of knowledge
in the eyes of another is my goal. I believe teaching is
more than tests, diplomas, paperwork, and fundraising. It
is the values I breathe daily into another...slowly. It is
in the faith I share in Jesus...ever changing and
growing...never ending. I believe my success today goes
unnoticed...until those i teach and touch can stand alone and
say "in my life I have learned..." I believe if I have
taught and touched one person...in God's name...I have used my
gift to me justly..and can humbly say... I believe in
teaching.... I AM A TEACHER!!

"The Light Of The
Lowcountry'" Magazine's
APPLE AWARD!
"Apple Award Winner" Betty
Jane Barker Miller Retired History Teacher
"Guardian Of The Flame Of History"
by Marty Clayton Banfield
(article
below appeared in the Feb. 14, 2007's Advertizer-Herald
Newspaper, Bamberg,
SC)
If you have not met Betty Jane Barker Miller,
then you don't know what you are missing! This little lady,
mind you, is no ORDINARY little lady! In fact, she will
usually be wearing a dashing & daring hat of many different
colors, which is her "trademark", so to speak.
She is a well
known Southern Icon to us all around these parts, and all who know
her love her! She truly wears "many different hats", being a
dedicated local historian, a much sought after speaker, former
History teacher, and our own local "Guardian Of The Flame" of
the heritage and history of Bamberg and other surrounding
counties.
Ms. Miller is responsible for Mt. Pleasant Lutheran
Church, St. John's Baptist, Mizpah Methodist Rivers Bridge, as well
as numerous other churches and local Historic sites being placed on
the State & National Register.
She has helped to erect
a total of 16 different Historical Markers! She is a
veritable treasure trove of walking, talking historical facts, but I
have to say that Ms. Miller is so much more than that! She is
also a retired History teacher, but don't let that fool you! She has
and never WILL retire from History! It is just in her
blood.
She taught for 37 years in the public and
private schools of Florida, Georgian, and South Carolina. She
is also credited in helping to edit the book, "The History of
Bamberg County, South Carolina", which was published in 1997 by
the Bamberg Historical Society. This book was published along
with President of the Historical Society, Nancy Foster, and
compiler, Magaret Spann Lawrence.
Ms. Miller is
currently a member of the S. C. Historical Society, S. C.
Genealogical Society, Bamber Co. Historical Society, United
Daughters of the Confederacy, and many, many more
organizations. She has been listed in "Who's Who of American
Women", Personalities of the South, Five Hundred First Families of
America, Hereditary Register of the U. S. Hereditary Society Blue
Book, and "Who's Who in America."
Betty Jane has traveled
extensively in the US and Canada; also to England, The Bahamas,
Belgium, & Luxemburg. She also traveled to Paris in 1989
as S. C. Representative in the 1812 delegation (Daughters of the
American Revolution) and in 2001 to Scotland.
I could
go on naming a long list of credentials, but can see by this,
that Ms. Miller has contributed so very much to Bamberg County in
the giving of her time and many talents. She has literally
helped to put many historical sites in Bamberg County, "on the map
by helped to establish and erect so many historical markers.
I also found that Ms. Miller is a very busy little
lady. She might be spotted anywhere speaking on the history of
yet another of our local churches or families. Wherever Ms.
Miller speaks or makes an appearance, she will undoubtedly
have on one of her signature hats! She can be found flitting
all over the "old Bamberg-Barnwell" district, as she calls it,
speaking on the history of our local churches and families.
You might see Ms. Miller at some local historic event dressed in a
vintage Civil War period dress, complete with hoop skirt , tightly
buttoned up neckline of a true Southern Belle, and parasol!
She is always a welcome addition to any gathering!
Ms. Miller
is the epitome of what Southern Legends are made of. She has
graced Bamberg and Barnwell counties with her Southern charm, and
her very own unique style. She is a true icon to us all.
How so? Let we forget, she is an icon of our history, our
heritage, our deep ancestral roots, our ancestry, and our strong
southern family ties.
She urges us all to teach our children
the family stories and family history, so that our family and
community history will not be forgotten. She urges us to
remember the "Pioneering" spirit which forefathers who settled this
country had, and to keep our history ALIVE! She urges us not to
forget, and to work to keep history alive in our daily
lives.
So, if you are out and about, you might notice this
charming little lady with the many different hats, loads of
Southern charm and grace. If you happen to see our very own
Ms. Miller, remember that you are seeing much more than just a true
Southern Belle, she is our very own living, walking, talking
"Southern Legend", keeping the FLAME OF HISTORY alive for us
all.
We thank you, Ms. Miller, for being our local
"Guardian of the Flame of History" and for contributing so much to
Bamberg County.

A Teacher's
Prayer |

A Teacher's
Prayer by Jill Wolf
I want to teach my students more
than lessons in a book; I want to teach
them deeper things that people
overlook-- The value of a rose in bloom,
its use and beauty, too, A sense of curiosity to
discover what is true; How to think and how to
choose the right above the wrong, How to live and
learn each day and grow up to be strong; To teach
them always how to gain in wisdom and in
grace, So they will someday make the world
a brighter, better place. Lord, let me be a friend and
guide to give these minds a start Upon
their way down life's long road, then I'll
have done my
part.

UNITY |
|
by Ray
A. Lingenfelter
I dreamed I stood in a studio and
watched two sculptors there. The clay they used was a
young child's mind and they fashioned it with
care.
One was a teacher and the tools she
used were books and music and art. One was a
parent with a guiding hand and a gentle, loving
heart.
And when at last their work was done, they
were proud of what they had wrought. For the things they
had worked into the child could never be sold or
bought.
And each agreed she would have failed if
she had worked alone for behind the parent stood the
school and behind the teacher stood the
home.
